Is it an emergency?

Call right away if your pet has any of these signs. If you’re not sure, call. It’s always better to ask.

  • Trouble breathing, or blue, grey or very pale gums
  • Collapse, fainting or sudden weakness
  • A seizure, or seizures one after another
  • Bleeding that won’t stop
  • Hit by a car, a fall or another major injury, even if your pet seems fine
  • A swollen, hard belly or trying to vomit without bringing anything up, especially in large dogs
  • Straining to urinate with little or nothing coming out, especially in male cats
  • Eating something toxic, such as chocolate, grapes or raisins, xylitol, lilies (cats), rat poison, cannabis or human medication
  • Repeated vomiting or diarrhea, or any blood in either
  • Signs of severe pain: crying out, hiding, not wanting to move
  • Trouble giving birth

What to do

  1. Stay as calm as you can. Your pet will pick up on your stress.
  2. Call ahead so the team knows you’re coming.
  3. Move your pet carefully. Use a carrier for cats and small pets, or a blanket or board as a stretcher for larger dogs.
  4. If your pet ate something toxic, bring the package or a photo of the label.
  5. Don’t give human medication unless a veterinarian tells you to.

Possible poisoning

Call us or Mainland first. You can also call a pet poison hotline for advice any time. Fees may apply.
