Wellness and preventive care

What happens at a wellness exam?

A wellness exam is a nose-to-tail check of your pet’s eyes, ears, teeth, heart, lungs, skin and weight. Your veterinarian also talks with you about vaccines, parasite prevention and nutrition.

Regular exams help us find problems early, when they’re usually easier to treat. Bring a list of any changes you’ve noticed at home, like appetite, energy or bathroom habits.

How often does my pet need a check-up?

Most healthy adult dogs and cats need an exam once a year. Senior pets and pets with ongoing conditions often need to come in more often.

Which vaccines does my pet need?

It depends on your pet’s age, lifestyle and health. Your veterinarian will recommend a vaccine schedule at the exam.

Puppy and kitten care

When should I bring in my new puppy or kitten?

Book a first visit soon after you bring your new puppy or kitten home. We’ll check their overall health, start vaccines and deworming, and answer your questions about feeding, training and spay or neuter timing.

Young pets need a series of visits in their first few months.

What should I bring to the first visit?

Bring any records from the breeder, shelter or rescue, a list of the food you’re feeding, and a stool sample if you can.

Senior pet care

How is care different for senior pets?

Senior pets age faster than we do, so we recommend more frequent exams and routine bloodwork. This helps us spot changes like kidney disease, arthritis or dental pain early and keep your pet comfortable.

At home, watch for drinking more, weight loss, stiffness, accidents in the house or changes in sleep or behaviour. Small changes are often the first sign something needs attention.

When is my pet considered a senior?

It varies by size and breed, but many dogs and cats are considered seniors around 7 years old. Large dogs often age sooner.

Dental care

Do you offer dental cleanings for dogs and cats?

Yes. We offer dental exams and professional cleanings for dogs and cats. Cleanings are done under general anaesthesia so we can safely clean below the gumline, check every tooth and treat problems we find.

Several of our veterinarians have a special interest in dentistry. Signs your pet may need dental care include bad breath, red or bleeding gums, tartar, dropping food or chewing on one side.

Why does my pet need anaesthesia for a cleaning?

Most dental disease is below the gumline. Anaesthesia keeps your pet still and pain-free so we can examine and clean every tooth safely and thoroughly.

Is anaesthesia safe for my pet?

We examine every pet before an anaesthetic and monitor them closely throughout. Your veterinarian will talk with you about any risks for your pet.

Surgery

Do you perform surgery at the hospital?

Yes. We perform surgery at the hospital. Your veterinarian will examine your pet first, explain the procedure, and give you clear instructions for before surgery and for recovery at home.

How do I prepare my pet for surgery?

Follow the instructions we give you when you book, including when to stop food, and let us know about any medications or supplements your pet takes.

Diagnostics: X-rays and lab work

Can you do X-rays and bloodwork?

Yes. We take X-rays at the hospital and run bloodwork and other lab tests. These help us diagnose illness, check organ function before anaesthesia and monitor ongoing conditions.

Your veterinarian will explain what each test is for before we go ahead.

Nutrition and dietary counselling

Can you help with my pet’s diet or weight?

Yes. We offer dietary counselling for weight management, food sensitivities, life stages and medical conditions. We’ll recommend a diet that fits your pet, and you can order food through our online store.

End of life care

How do you help when it’s time to say goodbye?

We help you understand your pet’s quality of life and your options. When it’s time, we provide a calm, gentle euthanasia, talk with you about aftercare, and take time to answer your questions.

If you’re unsure whether it’s time, call us and we’ll talk it through with you.
